GEO advisors are here to help you figure out study away plans and to prepare you for your program. There are four easy ways to access the GEO advising team – Study Away 101 Sessions, Duke-Approved Workshops, Walk-In Advising, and Individual Advising Sessions.

Study Away 101 Sessions
Your first step in advising is to attend a group information session. These sessions are held twice weekly and are available on Zoom. Topics covered include:
- How to search for programs based on your area of study
- How credit approvals work on study away programs
- Application process overview
- Finances overview
Walk-in Advising
Walk-in advising is for quick questions. If you don’t need a full 30-minute appointment, please consider stopping by a walk-in session hosted by our peer advisors. Walk-in advising can be used to double-check a policy or procedure or to confirm you’re on track with your application, worksheet, or other pre-departure steps.
Individual Advising Appointments
For quick questions regarding logistics, please email geoadvising@duke.edu or attend drop-in advising with a peer advisor. If you want to know what a certain program is like from a fellow student’s perspective or have questions about making friends, fitting in, independent travel, etc., you can reach out to a study away ambassador.
If you are having trouble scheduling a study away advising appointment or are worried that your appointment isn't for several weeks, please attend a Study Abroad 101 Session, come to walk-in advising hours with a peer advisor, or review Choosing a Program.
Meeting with a GEO advisor is required to petition a program. Advising is also required for a handful of Duke-Approved programs, including all semester Oxford programs, London School of Economics, and International Christian University (Japan). Advising is available for all other programs, both Duke-Administered and Duke-Approved, but it is not required.
Unless you’re considering Oxford, London School of Economics, or a petition program, you don’t need to meet with an advisor until 6-8 months prior to departure. Before that, we encourage you to explore programs independently, and attend the Global Education Fair, a Study Away 101 Session, Duke-Approved Workshop, and Study Away Program Information Sessions to narrow down your options and learn more about the process.
Please keep application deadlines in mind. Duke-Administered, Duke-Approved, and petition deadlines are all different. Please consult the following for program-specific deadlines:
